An open-hatch sunshade can provide shade and may deflect some rain, depending on its design and conditions. It does not make an open hatch watertight. Distinguish it from a fitted cover for a closed hatch and from an insect screen.
Identify the exact hatch and dimensions
Record the manufacturer, range and model, then use its drawing and the shade’s measurement instructions. Overall frame, lid and deck cut-out dimensions differ. For example, the cited Lewmar Low Profile size 40 drawing lists 491 × 491 mm overall and 421 × 421 mm cut-out; this is not a universal shade size.
Check mounting and operating clearance
Use only the attachment method supplied or approved for the product and hatch. Allow normal opening, closing and required access. Do not drill, add magnetic fixings or assume offshore suitability from a generic guide. Remove or stow the shade when conditions exceed its stated limits; frame material alone is not a wind rating.
Read the exact fabric and care specification
Compare the chosen textile’s documented shade, water-resistance and care properties, including seams and closures. Do not assign a fixed lifespan or waterproof rating from the fibre or brand name alone. Clean, dry and retreat only as the manufacturer specifies; annual spray treatment is not a rule for every fabric.
